Each behaviour is included because it is (a) observable non-invasively, (b) plausibly linked to welfare state, and (c) measurable in a repeatable way. Every page records the modulating factors with an explicit direction of effect, and separates established findings from open questions so the evidence base stays honest.

Figures follow a consistent style (see R/make_figures.R) grounded in standard manuscript conventions — scatter plots with error bars by size class, boxplots across weight ranges, and multi-panel comparisons.
